  • Directory Submission in 2026: Which Directories Still Matter

Directory submission used to mean adding your site to hundreds of generic web directories. Today that approach is low value and can look spammy. Google’s own spam policies list low-quality directory links among link spam. What still works is listing on curated, relevant, well-used directories where people actually look for providers like you.

Directories that are usually worth your time

Type Examples Why it can help
Software and SaaS G2, Capterra, GetApp, AlternativeTo, SourceForge, Product Hunt Buyers compare tools here, and reviews build trust.
Agencies and B2B services Clutch, GoodFirms, DesignRush Verified reviews and project portfolios help buyers shortlist.
Company profiles Crunchbase, LinkedIn Company Page Widely referenced by journalists and data tools.
Reviews Trustpilot Visible star ratings influence click-through and conversion.
Developer resources GitHub, package registries relevant to your language Developers discover tools through these channels.
Local and trade See our business listing sites list Local citations support map visibility.

How to judge a directory before you submit

    1. Is it curated? Look for editorial review or approval, not “instant approval for everyone”.
    2. Is it relevant? The category should match your business closely.
    3. Does it have real visitors? Check whether it shows up in search and whether anyone engages with listings.
    4. Is it clean? Avoid pages packed with ads, thousands of unrelated links and no moderation.
    5. Are paid listings disclosed? Paid placement is fine for visibility, but sponsored links should be marked as such.

    Submission tips

    • Use the same business name and details everywhere.
    • Write a unique description for each listing instead of pasting the same text.
    • Choose the most specific category available.
    • Keep a spreadsheet of where you are listed, login details and renewal dates.
A handful of strong listings beats a hundred weak ones. If a directory would not make sense to a customer, it will not make sense to a search engine either.
